For many in Montreal, Maurice Richard was more than just a legendary hockey player. The Rocker at times carried the whole city on his back during the 1940s and 50s. During his career he scored 544 goals and added another 421 assists, winning the Cup eight times for the Canadiens. Since the year 1999, the league’s leading goal scorer is awarded the Maurice Richard Trophy in honor of the winger. Richard passed away from cancer in 2000, but he is still commemorated in Montreal in films, books and documentaries.
