Buchanan knew all about Chimanuka’s reputation, and he was aware that over the years the huge silverback had been pretty friendly with the park rangers.

Not only was Chimanuka friendly with the rangers it came into contact with on a regular basis, but he was also welcoming to tourists and scientists. During his filming in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Buchanan had already seen evidence that Chimanuka had a huge heart and was not the violent type. In fact, Chimanuka was a pretty compassionate gorilla.
