A poem called A Visit From St. Nicholas was published in 1823 and gave Santa the image of a plump, jolly man who traveled around the world with his sleigh and eight reindeer on Christmas Eve to deliver presents for children by squeezing down their chimneys.
Though Clement Clarke Moore came forward in 1837 and claimed authorship, the writer has been disputed, as the poem was first published anonymously. Regardless, the poem is known today as ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas. Perhaps you’ve heard of it?
