Hedican grew up on the ice in freezing cold Saint Paul, Minnesota. After training throughout his teens he was drafted to the St. Louis Blues in 1988. He made his Olympic debut with the US team at the 1992 Winter Olympics in France. He shifted teams throughout his 20 year career before announcing his retirement live on the air while playing with the Anaheim Ducks. Soon after retiring he was announced as a hockey correspondent for Comcast SportsNet in California.
