The World Wildlife Federation (WWF) reports that there were once 500,000 rhinos roaming across Africa and Asia at the beginning of the 20th century. Today the organization believes that very few rhinos are able to survive out of captivity due to the high levels of poaching. The animals are hunted down for their horns, which has pushed several species to the brink of extinction. Another problem facing the rhino is the continual loss of their habitat, which is also contributing their dwindling numbers.
