As the weeks turned into months, the signs that Athena would beat cancer gradually started to disappear. While she was fighting the disease, the youngster turned 13, but it didn’t feel like there was much to celebrate.

With her health deteriorating so much, the Orchards worried that this was the last birthday their daughter would ever have. It felt like it would take a miracle to bring her back from the brink, and that was something they just didn’t have in their arsenal. This was only going to end one way.
