Over the years, Father Christmas and Santa Claus have merged to basically become one person, but originally this wasn’t the case. The Father originated in Britain as a personification of the Christmas spirit who was a gift giver and cheery man.
Eventually, it seems that some of his characteristics combined with some of Saint Nicholas’ in order to create the Santa of today. He is also represented in Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol as the Ghost of Christmas Present.
