Following Karolyi’s outburst towards the judges at the 1980 Moscow Olympics, the Romanian government had been pestering Karolyi and his family incessantly. Finally, when the 1981 Nadia Tour reached the United States, Karolyi, his wife, and the team choreographer all defected to the United States where they sought political asylum.
On top of the fact that Karolyi and his wife were asking for asylum and were forced to leave their daughter behind in Romania, Nadia was crushed that her best friend had essentially abandoned her.
