The 1980 Olympics were held in Moscow, Russia, and were boycotted by the United States and Jimmy Carter. However, Nadia was right in the thick of it, representing her home country of Romania.
In order to try to distract this world champion gymnast, the Russian government got dozens of their rowdiest soldiers to come to her matches in order to scream “fall, Nadia, fall!” Nadia for her part says that she was too focused on winning to notice.
