Nadia was only one of five Romanian defectors crossing into Hungary that night. She swam across the river, got to the other side, and began to walk.
She was stopped by Hungarian border guards, but they immediately recognized her and permitted her to pass without incident. She then continued on to the border with Austria where she met up with Panait. Panait took her to the US Embassy in the Austrian capital of Vienna where she was provided with a flight to New York.
