During the 2016 Olympic trials, Sanya unfortunately suffered from a horrible injury on her right hamstring that ultimately ended her career. No longer able to run, or compete in the 2016 Olympics like she had planned, she announced her retirement.

Instead of competing, she worked on the other side as a commentator for the track and field events during the 2016 Summer Olympics. The former athlete is now a mom to an adorable baby boy and working as a writer. She recently published a book for kids titled Run With Me, and a book for adults called Chasing Grace.
