Sometimes, to get a bit extra from their actor’s performances, directors will try anything. During one scene, actress Olivia de Havilland, playing Melanie Hamilton, is giving birth and seems to be doing a convincing job of being in pain.

Off camera the director, Victor Fleming, went to extreme lengths to get the best out of de Havilland and out of view of the camera he was pinching the actress’ toes. While the methods might be questionable, he definitely got the performance he had been hoping for.
