Can you tell the difference between a football and a football helmet? A referee at the game between the Jets and Seahawks in 1998 couldn’t. With time ticking down at the end of the game, the Jets were losing 31-26 but were in great position or a touchdown at the five yard line. Vinny Testaverde was stopped a yard short, but his helmet – a white helmet – crossed the threshold into the end zone, and the refs called it a touchdown. At this point there was no instant replay, and the Jets won 32-31. The officials supervisor later said the ref saw the helmet cross the line and mistook it for the ball. Thankfully, nowadays all scoring plays are reviewed and coaches have the ability to challenge.
