As the story goes, in 1970, when the Australian national team went to play Rhodesia – now Zimbabwe – in the World Cup qualifiers, they consulted a witch doctor who cursed their opponents and buried bones by the goals. Australia would win 3-1, but never paid the witch doctor, who then cursed the Australian team. After, Australia failed to make the World Cup until finally they broke through in 2006. But, two years earlier in 2014, John Safran travelled to Mozambique, where he found a witch doctor to reverse the curse. Coincidence?
