Phil Luckett’s coin toss mishap may be one of the most controversial and bizarre calls in NFL history. A Thanksgiving game between the Detroit Lions and Pittsburgh Steelers went into overtime, tied at 16. Luckett and team captains met in centerfield for the coin toss. The Steeler’s Jerome Bettis appeared to call tails, but then when Luckett grabbed the quarter, he announced that Bettis called heads and lost the toss. Bettis and his teammates disputed the incident, but to no avail. Detroit was given the ball to start overtime, and eventually won the sudden death overtime with a 42-yard field goal.
