Age is just a number. That’s what Diana Nyad and many others on this list teach us. Nyad kept swimming until she was 64 years old, meaning she had an entire career after she turned 40. In 1975, before her 40th birthday, Nyad swam the perimeter of Manhattan. Four years later she swam from the Bahamas to Florida, a 102-mile swim. After her 40th, Nyad continued with her extreme swimming and swam from Cuba to Florida in 2011. She swam for 53 straight hours at the age of 64.
