Melis eventually left South Africa and became a citizen of the Republic of Turkey, where she lives and runs today. She has represented the country at the 2009 Mediterranean Games where she got a silver medal, then got a bronze at the European Team Championships later that very same year. However, it was the medal that she won at the 2009 World Championships in Athletics which really brought her to international prominence. Melis currently holds the long jump records for both South Africa and Turkey.
