Ivana Spanovic was born in what was once Yugoslavia and what would eventually become Serbia and Montenegro. She competed in her first ever competition in Marrakech, Morocco in 2005, coming in 16th place. With the break off of Montenegro from the federation, Spanovic would continue to represent the country know known as Serbia in various international competitions, winning silver in the 2006 World Youth Championships as well as making it onto the Serbian National Team for the Beijing Olympics.
