Karin Mey Meils was born and raised (and even competed for) the country of South Africa. Her first ever international competition competing as a South African representative was at the 2005 Summer Universiade, where she finished in sixth place. Melis then tried out and scored a spot on the South African Olympic Team and competed for the country in Beijing. She did not medal, but she did compete in the qualifying stages.
