President Lyndon B. Johnson was sworn into power on board Air Force One just 2 hours after John F. Kennedy had been assassinated.
The image captures the solemn look on Johnson’s face as the circumstances of his presidency couldn’t have been worse. Reluctant to accept the power so soon, he was persuaded by officials on board that him being sworn in would provide some stability to those suffering from the shock of Kennedy’s untimely demise.
