Troops stormed the beach of Normandy in a bid to push back the German stronghold that had captured France. The soldiers involved had to get from these boats to the shore and then beyond the wall of German machine guns.
Many were slaughtered, but those who got past the barrage of gunfire managed to overcome the odds and force the monstrous army back. This day is known as D-Day and marked the beginning of the end of the Second World War.
