In 1969 humans made their first foray onto the surface of the moon. This was the time of the space race, where the USA battled with Russia, to become the first country to land on Earth’s satellite.
The USA won, and astronaut Neil Armstrong had the honor of being the first human to walk on the moon. He planted the American flag in the ground after uttering his famous “one small step for man” quote. The image brought an end to the space race and was widely celebrated across the USA.
