Australia was ravaged by a deadly wildfire on Saturday, February 7, 2009, which resulted in the deaths of over 173 people. There were at least 400 individual fires laying waste to the country and the day has become known in Australia as Black Saturday.
This image of a rescue worker coming to the aid of dehydrated koala bear became a symbol of hope to the people of Australia. Sam the Koala was taken to a wildlife center after suffering second-degree burns to her paws, but she thankfully survived the ordeal.
