A battle had been raging on the Japanese island of Iwo Jima in 1945 between the U.S. Marine Corps and the Imperial Japanese Army. During the battle, some of the Marines raised the American flag to signal they had reached the summit of the volcano on the island.
The image became the battle’s iconic image and it also broadly became the image for the American effort during the Second World War. This image became a sculpture in the Marine Corps War Memorial.
